Affordable Housing Policy

Summary

The government planning guidance encourages local authorities to seek the provision of affordable homes where there is local need.

The development of new affordable homes, achieved through either new build or conversion, can provide housing for households whose income is either:

  • Sufficient to enable them to afford only low-cost market housing, or,
  • Insufficient to enable them to rent or buy on the open market.

In the interests of avoiding areas of social exclusion, the provision of affordable homes can also help create mixed and balanced communities.

Further Information

See our main page on Adopted Supplementary Planning Guidance (SPG) for more information on the council's affordable housing policy.  In February 2008 the council published an affordable housing practise update. The council will in due course replace SPG10 and the affordable housing practise update with new Supplementary Planning Guidance on Affordable Housing.
