Arnside and Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB)
Summary
The Arnside and Silverdale AONB is an area of low limestone hills, limestone grasslands, ancient woodlands, fen mosses, salt marsh and inter-tidal mudflats. The area is designated for its landscape, which is of national importance and special controls are exercised to ensure developments are not detrimental to the reasons for designation.
The AONB Unit is the body set up in 2001 as successor to the Countryside Management Service to ensure the conservation and enhancement of the natural beauty of the area.
The AONB Unit manages two Local Nature Reserves on behalf of Lancaster City Council, as well as acting as an advocate for the AONB and its designation. It co-ordinates, facilitates and organises conservation action on the ground either by working in partnership with other organisations and community groups, through the activities of our volunteers or in association with the Arnside and Silverdale AONB Landscape Trust (a Registered Charity and membership organisation which supports the work of the AONB Unit).
