Summary
The council works with other agencies to reduce and manage the risk to people and the developed and natural environment from flooding and coastal erosion, by encouraging the provision of technically, environmentally and economically sound and sustainable defence measures.

The links on the right give information on self help for owners and occupiers to prepare for flooding. Also included is a link to details of sandbags that are made available by the city council for collection by individuals, as well as a list of the higher tides of the year.
The incidents of surface water flooding in 2007 have initiated a review by the government into the roles and resposibilities of various organisations in these events. This study is called the Pitt Report which was recently completed and is under consideration by the government.
Sand Bags
At times of risk, the council provides filled sandbags around the clock from sandbag stores (PDF 331K) which are in various locations.
Alternatively the following builders' merchants in the Lancaster district have advised the council that they will supply empty sand bags and sand and will deliver these.
Delivery charges vary dependant on the value of the order and the distance involved but in some circumstances free delivery is offered. Also in some cases the bags can be filled before delivery although an extra charge will be levied for this.

The National Flood Forum
The national flood forum provides support and advice to communities and individuals that have been flooded or are at risk of flooding. It is a collective, authoritative voice that aims to influence central and local government and all agencies that manage flood risk.
The National Flood Forum is a charity run by people who have experienced the trauma, loss and frustration that go with flooding or have first hand experience of supporting the victims of flooding both during and after the event.
Many people call the National Flood Forum to enquire about the Services and Products that are available to improve flood resilience or to assist them in making repairs following a flood event.
Whilst the NFF does not endorse any particular service or product, they have produced a directory that lists the companies that constitute the Flood Protection Industry and the services and products that they provide.
