Door Supervisors

Following the implementation of the provisions of the Private Security Industry Act 2001 there has been a change in law which affects:

  • The licensee of a licensed public house or club
  • A door supervisor or employed to keep order in licensed premises
  • The employer or supervisor of door or other security staff

The Private Security Industry Act requires all "Door supervisors" and those responsible for employing or supervising them to be licensed by the Security Industry Authority (SIA) and all licences granted under the old Lancaster City Council scheme are no longer valid. However, please note that the SIA have authorised key Lancaster City Council officers powers of inspection

You should not apply to Lancaster City Council - all applications must be made directly to the SIA. A licence application pack can be requested:

To obtain a licence, you must:

  • Be over 18
  • Pass an identity and criminal record check
  • Have the right SIA approved qualification

You may be excluded from obtaining a licence if you have a previous conviction. It depends on the type of offence involved. You can make a self-assessment online by going to www.the-sia.org.uk/ or contacting the help line on 08702 430 100.
