The Fire Service's top tips on how to be fire safe and protect yourself and your home from becoming the victim of a fire
- The majority of house fires originate in the kitchen, so remember...when you're cooking, keep on looking!
- If you cook chips, keep safe...Ban the pan, use a deep fat fryer!
- The use of candles and aromatherapy burners is on the increase...locate candles and oil burners away from curtains and furnishings, don't let a candle snuff you out!
- If you keep matches and lighters in the house, keep them away from children and teach them...Be a bright spark, don't play with matches or lighters!
- Electric blankets can be a hazard. Be on the safe side...Keep yourself covered, regularly check your electric blanket for faults!
- Electric fires often happen because people overload circuits by plugging too many appliances into sockets using adapters. Remember...Electrical safety leads to fire safety!
- Household waste and clutter can be dangerous by posing a fire risk...Keep it tidy, keep it safe!

- Fit a smoke alarm and check it every month, replace the battery every year. If you don't and have a fire, you may not know about it until it's too late...Remember, it's a lot easier to replace a dead battery!
- If you've got smokers in the house, make sure cigarette stubs and matches are disposed of safely, If you must strike a light, do it right!
- If you have a fire...Get out, stay out, call the Fire Service out!
