The Mayor and Mayoress of Lancaster celebrate the district's inclusion in the Olympic Torch Relay

The London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay will include a trip through the Lancaster district – and that’s official!

The announcement was made today by the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) that the official route will pass through Carnforth, Bolton-le-Sands, Hest Bank, Morecambe and Lancaster on Friday, June 22.

This part of the journey will mark the exact half way point of its 70 day journey from Land’s End to the Olympic Stadium in London.

The announcement was marked today by the Mayor of Lancaster, Paul Woodruff and County Councillor Roper at the iconic statue of Eric Morecambe on Morecambe Promenade when they were joined by some of Lancashire's rising sports stars including two of the nominee Torch Bearers, Ben Whipp and Bea Fletcher.

Commenting on the good news, Coun Woodruff, said: “I am delighted the Lancaster district and all its residents are set to benefit from this historic event when the eyes of the world will be upon us all as the Torch Relay passes through our towns and villages.”

“The city council will be working with local groups and the community to organise a range of events to celebrate this momentous occasion for the district and encourage residents, schoolchildren and visitors to come and share what I am sure will prove to be a very special and memorable time for us all.”

The 70-day Olympic Torch Relay, will start at Land’s End, Cornwall on the 19 May 2012 and will travel an estimated 8,000 miles around the UK.

The Torch Relay will pass through the district on Friday June 22 heading from Cumbria to Carnforth, Bolton-le-Sands, Hest Bank, Morecambe and Lancaster. The relay will then continue on to Blackpool via Garstang, St Michael's on Wyre and Fleetwood.
