Lapwing (Colin Smith - Natural England)

Lapwing (Colin Smith - Natural England)

Almost half the land area of our district is designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Its diverse and contrasting countryside extends from the internationally important estuaries of Morecambe Bay to the heather moorland and blanket bog clad fells of the Forest of Bowland and the bleak uplands of Leck Fell.

There are wooded limestone outcrops around Silverdale, and herb rich pastures and wooded valleys along the River Lune. The coastline contains headlands with saltmarshes and vast expanses of intertidal mud and sand flats which provide a rich source of food for internationally important populations of wintering wildfowl and wading birds.

This Directory is here to raise awareness of and support for these unique features of our local landscape.
