What is Council Tax?

The basic council tax charge is made up from the requirements of the authorities shown below:

  • Lancashire County Council
  • Lancaster City Council
  • Lancashire Police Authority
  • Lancashire Fire Authority

The basic council tax is higher in non-parished areas due to special expenses that are due to be met by the residents of these areas only.

In parished areas the basic council tax increases by the amount of money each parish has asked us to collect for them.

People who live in areas served by a parish or town council often have an extra amount to pay for services provided by these councils. This is called a parish precept, and the extra money collected by Lancaster City Council is paid over to them to help them meet their costs.

Where your council tax goes

  • Lancashire County Council: 73%
  • Lancaster City Council: 13%
  • Lancashire Police Authority: 10%
  • Lancashire Fire Authority: 4%
