Caravan and Camp Site Licensing
Information on caravan and camp site licensing, including required standards and online licence applications.
There are over 110 licensed caravan sites in the Lancaster City Council area. These vary from a single holiday caravan on a farm to large, multi use sites with over 600 units.
These may be touring, static holiday, residential (often referred to as mobile home sites or park homes), or any combination of these.
Site Licensing
Owners of caravan sites must, subject to certain exemptions, hold an appropriate site licence which, although free of charge, must have planning permission or a certificate of lawful development.
In order to ensure that conditions on site are adequate for the caravan occupants, certain minimum standards must be maintained. These include toilet and washing facilities, spacings between caravans, fire fighting provisions, electrical installations, etc.
In addition, owners renting caravans to others must ensure that the gas appliances and flues are given an annual safety check by a Gas Safe approved gas engineer.
Once licensed, all sites will be inspected by Environmental Health on a regular basis and all complaints are responded to promptly. If standards are not maintained, legal action may be taken against the site licence holder and, in extreme cases, necessary work may be carried out by the council and re-charged.
Camping sites must be similarly licensed, and similar standards apply.
