Finding information

There are five main ways of finding information on this site:

1.       Homepage

The homepage has direct links to our most viewed pages (Popular Pages) and to our online services (Report it, Pay for it, Apply for it, etc.). It also shows a selection of current news items (News) and the current main news or information feature.

Return to the homepage from any other page on the site by clicking on the council logo in the top left corner, or by clicking on the ‘Home’ link above the page title.

2.       Search

Use the search box to type in your own word(s) and carry out a search for those word(s) on our website. The search box is in the top right corner of every page.

It is best to use one or two key words rather than a long sentence, eg council tax, or council tax benefit.

Once you have searched for a word or phrase, all related pages on our website will be displayed. If there are many pages, you can narrow down your search by adding one or more extra key words.

3.       Browse by service or category

On the left hand side of every page, you will see a menu listing our main services and categories. If you click on any menu item, you will see links to other pages in each category. For example, in the Sport and Leisure category, you will see links to our sections on Libraries, Museums, Sport Facilities, etc.

At the top of this menu, there is always a link back to the homepage.

4.       A to Z

The A to Z is an alphabetical listing of all the main council services and departments and their contact details. The A to Z appears at the top right of every page.

Search the A to Z by clicking on the first letter of the service or information you are looking for.

5.       Site Map

The site map shows all the main categories of information on the site.

Access the site map by clicking on the Site Map link at the very top of every page. Then click on any part of the site map to go to the relevant category or section of our site.

Accessibility standards

Lancaster City Council aims to make this website accessible to all, regardless of ability or disability. We define an accessible site as one that accommodates the full range of users. Designing for accessibility therefore means accepting that, for online information, there is:

  • No standard information user, and
  • No standard device for browsing information

An accessible website does not exclude anybody due to:

  • Their abilities, or
  • The method they choose to access the web

Accessible websites prioritise clear content, structure and ease of navigation over cosmetic aspects of design. However they also need not be visually unattractive, nor are they prevented from using the latest web technologies, provided that all information is still accessible to users.

We strive to achieve and maintain levels of accessibility that conform to the AA standard of the Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI), but also recognise that it is very hard for a large and complex website to maintain such compliance on every single page.

If you have any difficulty finding or accessing information and services on this website, please email webmaster@lancaster.gov.uk
