Caton couple fined for allowing their dog to be out of control

A couple from Caton have been individually convicted of allowing their Doberman dog to be dangerously out of control in a public place.

A couple from Caton have been individually convicted of allowing their Doberman dog to be dangerously out of control in a public place.

Christopher and Carol Jackson, of Quernmore Road in Caton, were charged with the offences when they appeared before magistrates in Lancaster.  They both pleaded guilty to their charges, which concerned incidents in April and July last year.

The court heard that in the first incident, which took place in April 2007, Mr Jackson was taking the dog, known as Dinky, for a walk.  As they passed one of their neighbours the dog grabbed his leg and caused a small puncture wound.

On the second occasion, which took place in July 2007, the court heard, Mrs Jackson was taking the same dog for a walk along with a number of others. Another neighbour passed the dogs while out for a run and the Doberman grabbed her leg with its mouth.  Although the bite did not break the skin it left a bruise.

Magistrates ordered that a Contingent Destruction Order be made, meaning that the couple must ensure the dog is always under control while in a public place. Failing to comply with the order can lead to further sanctions through the courts.
In addition Mr Jackson was fined £800 and Mrs Jackson £900.

Coun David Kerr, cabinet member with responsibility for environmental health, said: "Not keeping your dog under control is a serious offence and can have serious consequences.
"We urge all dog owners to think and act responsibly in terms of keeping their pets under control, particularly while in public places."
