After spending many years writing and performing in California, Denny Laine makes a welcome return to Britain and will be performing a rare series of concerts, including The Platform in Morecambe,on Saturday May 10.
The concert will include not only a selection of the songs that he has written over the years, but also stories and anecdotes of the life of a British music legend.
For a few months back in the 60s, Denny Laine was one of the most recognisable voices on the entire UK music scene. As the lead singer of the Moody Blues, he stood out in a large pack. His soulful, agonized lead vocal performance, coupled with Mike Pinder’s chiming piano, proved irresistible on the radio. Within a year, however, the band fell by the wayside. Laine left the band in 1965 and was replaced by Justin Hayward and Moody Blues then adopted the increasingly adventurous sound that ended up making them the premiere progressive rock band of the late 60s.
Several smaller projects followed until 1971, when Paul McCartney announced that he was forming his first permanent band since exiting the Beatles. The group, christened Wings, was McCartney (joined by his wife Linda) on bass, guitar, piano and vocals, with Laine at the core on guitar, bass and vocals. In a 1980s interview Denny indicated that he and McCartney got along well as both came from similar musical backgrounds and had lost control of a band they had helped to found. Wings had immense commercial success releasing 9 albums and Denny co-wrote many of the hits including 'Mull of Kintyre'.
The concert will start at 8pm and tickets cost £15 from the Box Office on 01524 582803.
