One of the most sought after bands on the international Irish music scene, Lunasa, will perform at The Platform in Morecambe on Friday May 9.
Lunasa have become well known for their inventive arrangements and bass driven grooves that is steering Irish acoustic music into surprising new territory.
The band’s first CD ‘Lunasa’ was released in 1997 and was immediately hailed as one of the finest, freshest recordings of Irish music in years and was described as ‘moving, pulsating and thrilling to the very marrow’ by Folk Roots and ‘a true must-have disc’ by the Irish Voice. This first album became a best seller in Ireland, topping Hot Press folk charts and nominated one of the year’s top 10 by the Irish Echo in the USA.
Inspired by Ireland’s great 70s group The Bothy Band, Lunasa use melodic interweaving of wind and string instruments, pairing flutes, fiddles, whistles and pipes in often breathtaking arrangements.
Named after an ancient Celtic harvest festival in honour of the Irish god Lugh, patron of the arts, Lunasa is indeed a gathering of some of the top musical talents in Ireland. Its members have helped form the backbone of some of the greatest Irish groups of the decade.
