The Spring 2008 series of Lunchtime Concerts at the Platform in Morecambe will start on April 23.  All the concerts are on Wednesdays and take place from 12.45pm until approximately 1.30pm.  Admission is free but donations are welcome.

The full programme is as follows:

23rd April – The Chagall Trio  (violin, cello & viola)

30th April – Hotcha (Gypsy Jazz)

7th May – Promenade Wind Trio (clarinet, bassoon & oboe)

14th May – Val Baulard & The Black Horse Jazz Men

21st May – La Serenata Trio (voice, clarinet & piano)

The Chagall String Trio is part of the larger group, the Chagall Ensemble, who, after many years playing together in various combinations since their time at the RNCM have recently formed the group to concentrate on performing chamber music with piano.  In the absence of either a pianist or a piano, they will tackle one of the greatest keyboard pieces ever written, arranged for strings.

Hotcha features Heath Lavery on fiddle with Alan Pill and Jon Moore on guitars.  Inspired by the jazz of the 1930s led by Django Reinhardt, Stephane Grapelli and the Quintet of the Hot Club de France, they play with verve, passion and commitment.  The trio`s repertoire features many Django classics and they also perform more recent tunes in Hot Club style – a blend of gypsy fire and Parisian savoir faire.

The Promenade Wind Trio are Howard Rogerson – Clarinet, Fredrik Holm – Bassoon and Nigel  Atkinson - Oboe. The trio will be performing works by Ibert, Milhaud and Mozart.  The music for oboe, clarinet and bassoon was developed during the earlier part of the 20th century in France when 'Les Six' were all composing their new style of post romantic music in  pastiche styles.  Their music is typically French with lots of colour and contrasts.  All three performers are well established chamber and orchestra musicians and perform in Morecambe's own Promenade Concert Orchestra.

Val Baulard sings traditional jazz standards, well loved and popular tunes, accompanied by the Black Horse Jazz Men who are Peter Boswell, Peter Lawrence, Jack Schofield and Roy Edwards who between them play trumpet, trombone, bass, double bass, clarinet and saxes.  Val has been a professional singer for many years and has sung with the Jazz Men for several years.  They perform together and separately with other groups, extensively in the Yorkshire Dales and North Lancashire.

La Serenata Trio has been formed recently by three local musicians and comprises Tracie Penwarden (Mezzo soprano) from Milnthorpe, Janet Barlow (Clarinet) from Lancaster and Charles Edmondson (piano) from Kendal. They will present a very varied programme of music for voice, clarinet and piano.  Perhaps the most famous piece for this composition is Schubert's masterpiece 'The Shepherd on the Rock' and this will be included.  The concert will conclude with a selection of popular songs from the shows.
