Recycling race hots up
Schools across Lancaster are in a recycling frenzy, collecting as many old Yellow Pages directories as they can.
Schools across Lancaster are in a recycling frenzy, collecting as many old Yellow Pages directories as they can.
The schools are taking part in the Yellow Woods Challenge – the simple, educational and fun environmental campaign for schools run by Yellow Pages, the Woodland Trust and Lancaster City Council.
Schools have been competing against each other to collect thousands of old Yellow Pages directories, which will be recycled into pet bedding. Schools that recycle the most directories per pupil will be awarded a share of £700 from Yellow Pages after the race finishes on May 23, 2008.
While the youngsters are busy collecting directories, they are also invited to take part in a national art competition. Schools that create the best giant artwork using the old directories will be in with a chance to win up to £1,000 in cash prizes.
Coun Jon Barry, Lancaster City Council’s cabinet member with responsibility for City Council (Direct) Services, said: “As a council we are always looking at ways we can educate children about the benefits of recycling.
"The Yellow Woods Challenge is a great way of doing this while diverting some old directories away from landfill."
For every pound awarded to schools, Yellow Pages gives a matching pound to the Woodland Trust to support its ‘Tree For All’ campaign, the most ambitious children’s tree-planting project ever launched in the UK.
