Short term closure of Cable Street car park

One of Lancaster’s most popular car parks will be closed for up two weeks from Monday May 12 for improvement works.
Lancaster City Council will be resurfacing, erecting new fencing and providing cycle and motorcycle parking on the Cable Street car park as part of its commitment to providing good quality parking for visitors to the city.
The works also include realigning the car park's exit onto Cable Street to prevent short cutting through the car park and across the one-way system into the superstore car park.
This short cut has been a cause for concern for some time with increased vehicular movements in the Cable Street car park creating a safety hazard for pedestrians. The alternative route to the superstore will be via Rosemary Lane, Lower Church Street, North Road and Damside Street.
Coun John Gilbert, cabinet member with responsibility for parking policy, said: "The reconstruction of Cable Street car park demonstrates the council’s commitment to improving car parks and reinvesting in the parking stock in the district."
The council has written to all businesses in the immediate vicinity of the car park and hopes to minimise the inconvenience for businesses and their customers.
Signs will advise motorists of the car park closure and St Nicholas Arcades Car Park will be opened in the evenings until midnight to provide additional evening parking capacity in this area.
The works to the car park are supported by the Lancaster District Chamber of Commerce, Trade and Industry.
Jerry North from the Chamber added: "I am pleased to see the city council investing in this important facility for both day and night time economies and am satisfied that they have taken the necessary measures to minimise disruption during the refurbishment period."
