Lancaster City Council held its annual girls' six-a-side football competition on Wednesday April 23.
Twenty teams from 16 primary schools around the district battled it out at Salt Ayre Sports Centre for the trophy.
Throughout the early stages of the competition all the teams, which were made up from pupils in Years five and six, showed some superb footballing skills. Ellel, St Patrick’s, Willow Lane and Moorside A all qualified for the quarter finals top of their respective groups.
The rest of the quarter final line-up was made up by Bolton-le-Sands, St Peter’s A, Ridge and St Luke’s. The shock result saw the Ridge beating a strong Willow Lane team.
The semi finals pitched four of the strongest teams in the competition against each other, with Bolton-le-Sands v Ridge and Moorside A v St Patrick’s. It was obvious that these were going to be very hard fought contests from the start. Neither semi final disappointed.
In the first semi final a strong Bolton-le-Sands team played an inspired Ridge team that seemed to be getting better the further they progressed. The two teams could not be separated after both full time and extra time so it went down to penalties. Ridge Community Primary School held their nerve to win 5 – 4 on spot kicks. In the second semi final Moorside A were narrowly beaten by St Patrick’s 1 – 0.
The final proved to be a very closely fought contest. St Patrick’s took advantage of tired legs and despite Ridge’s best efforts, St Patrick’s were just too strong, coming out 3-0 winners.
St Patrick’s received Lancaster City Council’s Cultural Services cup. All the competitors received a medal for their efforts.
Scott Wilcock, cultural development officer, said: “All the teams that took part played the competition in the spirit in which it was intended. It was a great day and the football on show was a joy to watch.”
