Council consults on plans to inspect contaminated land

Lancaster City Council would like to hear your views on its plans for inspecting contaminated land in the district.

Lancaster City Council would like to hear your views on its plans for inspecting contaminated land in the district.

The council has produced a draft Inspection Strategy for Contaminated Land to outline where it will look for contamination and what it will do if it finds significant concerns.

This may be of interest to residents, land owners and people interested in the area’s wildlife, history and industrial heritage.

Coun David Kerr, cabinet member with responsibility for Environmental Health, said: "There is a legacy of land across the UK that may have been contaminated by past and present industrial uses. Contaminated soil and water resources are not always easy to spot and there may be land that has been occupied for many years that remains contaminated.

"Our top priority is to protect people's health and in producing this Inspection Strategy we have taken a careful and thorough approach to ensure people are protected from contaminated land.
"We would very much like to hear people's views on these proposals."

Originally published in 2002, the Inspection Strategy has been updated and contains sections considering the implications for protecting people’s health, water resources, farming interests, sensitive ecosystems and protected heritage sites.

A summary leaflet outlining the major issues is also available.
The consultation documents are on view in local libraries, at Lancaster and Morecambe Town Halls, and on the internet at www.lancaster.gov.uk/contaminatedland until September 12.  A range of organisations with a particular interest will receive individual invitations to comment.
