Lancaster City Council is flying the flag to celebrate London becoming the next host city to the Olympic Games.

Lancaster City Council is flying the flag to celebrate London becoming the next host city to the Olympic Games.

As the Beijing Games came to a close on Sunday, the official London Olympic Handover Flag was raised from the roof of Lancaster Town Hall.

The flag will fly from the building until August 29, before moving to Morecambe Town Hall, where it will fly until September 5.

The Mayor of Lancaster, Coun Keith Budden, welcomed the moment: "Although four years away, the London Olympic Games have the ability to inspire a generation of potential athletes.

"By flying the handover flag we are showing that, as a district, we both support and celebrate the games coming to the UK.

"Hopefully some athletes from our district will be there taking part."
Lancaster is one of more than 400 towns and cities in the UK to be flying the handover flag.
