West End Gardens in final for tourism awards

The West End Gardens on Morecambe Promenade has been shortlisted as a finalist for England’s North West Tourism Awards 2008.

The West End Gardens on Morecambe Promenade has been shortlisted as a finalist for England’s North West Tourism Awards 2008.

The nomination was submitted by Lancaster City Council under the ‘Public Space Award’ category. The award has been designed to reward projects that have improved the built environment for visitors.

Becoming a finalist shows that the gardens have been recognised by the North West Development Agency for excellence in areas such as design, ongoing maintenance, sustainability, accessibility, innovation and ambition. They have been impressed by how the project has helped to boost the visitor economy of the area.

The redevelopment of the gardens included providing three separate play areas for ages 1 – 14 years, landscaping, a performance plaza, water fountains, picnic areas, art sculptures designed by local school children and finally, the new café and toilets.

The next stage in the competition will involve a group of expert judges making an unannounced visit to the West End Gardens within the next four weeks to help with their final decision.

The winner will be announced at the England’s North West Tourism Awards ceremony taking place on October 22 in St George’s Hall, Liverpool.

Coun Evelyn Archer, Lancaster City Council's cabinet member with responsibility for regeneration in Morecambe, said: “It is excellent news that we are gaining recognition for the West End Gardens and whether we win or not, it is an honour to reach the final. Everyone who has been a part of the redevelopment of the gardens should feel proud of their achievement, especially the pupils from Heysham High School and Sandylands and West End Primary Schools.”
