Wheels in motion for latest phase of recycling scheme

The latest phase of the Lancaster district’s refuse revolution has begun with the rolling out of wheeled bins and recycling boxes to a further 6,000 households.

The latest phase of the Lancaster district’s refuse revolution has begun with the rolling out of wheeled bins and recycling boxes to a further 6,000 households.

Over the last six years Lancaster City Council has been making it easier for residents to recycle by introducing a ‘three stream’ waste collection in which households receive two wheeled bins (one for non-recyclable items, one for green garden waste) and recycling boxes.

The aim is to reduce the amount of rubbish being sent to the country’s ever-dwindling landfill sites.

Thanks to residents of the district the existing phases of the schemes have been a huge success, increasing the district's recycling rate from 6% in 2002 to the current rate of 30%.

Coun Jon Barry, cabinet member with responsibility for waste management, said:
“This is the last major roll-out of the new recycling scheme. Once this has been done we need to concentrate our efforts on making sure that everyone is recycling properly so that we can push our rates up still higher. We will also be looking to recycle new materials such as food waste that are not currently included.”

Households to go on the scheme will include:
Cockerham, Over Wyresdale, Quernmore, Wray, Roeburndale, Dolphinholme, Melling, Cantsfield, Tunstall, Burrow, Ireby, Leck, Wennington, remainder Ellel, remainder Poulton (including the Branksome Estate), Aldcliffe, Bayhorse and part of Westgate.

If you live in one of these areas you should have received an information pack explaining how the scheme works. Collections will start in the first week of September.

The council is also in the process of meeting with residents who occupy flats in Lancaster City Centre to identify what best suits their individual needs and how they can be introduced to the recycling scheme.
