Lancaster Square Routes: Revitalising historic places and routes in Lancaster City Centre

Lancaster City Council has been awarded funding to develop proposals to revitalise some of Lancaster City Centre’s public streets and spaces.

Lancaster City Council has been awarded funding to develop proposals to revitalise some of Lancaster City Centre’s public streets and spaces.

The Northwest Development Agency (NWDA) has awarded the money to the council to prepare detailed design proposals to upgrade a number of spaces within the city centre, including Market Square.

The council is now seeking comments to help evaluate the current issues and potential opportunities arising from these places.

Coun Abbott Bryning, cabinet member with responsibility for regeneration in Lancaster, said: “Many spaces in the city centre are now tired and uninviting and are not contributing as they should to a vibrant centre for the heritage city. I am delighted that the NWDA is supporting this important project and look forward to seeing the proposals.”

In Spring 2007, the city council undertook a public consultation at Market Square and established that there was a strong consensus for improving it.

Since then, the council has been investigating potential funding opportunities and looking at other areas within the city centre which need revitalising.

The first phase, undertaken by the council, will involve analysis of the area and the development of a design framework.

To assist in preparing the framework, the council is now asking for people’s views on:

Market Square
Signage improvements to the Castle Precinct
Market Street Illumination / Lighting
Sun Street Square / Sun Street
Horseshoe Corner
Castle and Quay green space
Castle and Priory Precinct
Key linking routes (Upper and Lower Church Street, Ffrances Passage and Gage Street)

The council is keen to hear from all users of these spaces, including residents, visitors and traders and would particularly like to know:

* What do you like / think is positive about these places?
* Does anything detract from them?
* Do you feel safe in them at all times of day? What would make them feel safer?

Comments with reference to topics such as access, seating, lighting, artwork, planting and signage will be particularly useful.

Comments should be sent to: Lancaster Square Routes, Forward Planning, Planning Services, Lancaster City Council, Lancaster Town Hall, LA1 1PJ

Or emailed to: squareroutes@lancaster.gov.uk (marked Lancaster Square Routes in the subject line).

The deadline for responses is 5pm on Monday January 5 2009.
