A Morecambe primary school has won £1,000 to help target one of the scourges of modern society – litter.
Earlier this year Lancaster City Council challenged primary schools across the district to come up with some creative ways of combating rubbish on our streets.
Pupils were asked to think of ideas their school could use to improve the overall cleanliness of the district, or reduce litter.
Lancaster Road School in Morecambe won the competition and the top prize of £1,000.
As well as match day announcements at Christie Park, the home of Morecambe FC, to remind spectators to put their rubbish in the bin, the money will be used to print stickers designed by the children for the council’s litter bins and posters to go into local shops.
The school will also be improving the environment section of its website, to educate and change the attitudes of children and their parents on issues such as recycling and climate change.
Coun Jon Barry, cabinet member with responsibility for waste and recycling, said: “Lancaster Road School has come up with some really innovative ideas and they are worthy winners. I am glad also that the school is moving forward on other environmental issues such as climate change.”
