Council's cash incentive to encourage young people to wage war on litter

Lancaster City Council is challenging primary school pupils to come up with ideas to combat litter in the district.

As part of its Putting Litter in its Place campaign, the council is offering £1,000 prize money to the primary school that comes up with the best idea that they can put into practice.

Pupils are being asked to think of an idea that their school can implement to improve the overall cleanliness of the district, or reduce litter.

The prize money can be spent on whatever pupils choose for their school, from new books, to sports areas or equipment.

Coun Jon Barry, cabinet member with responsibility for waste and cleansing said: "Litter around schools is often a problem and we want to work with young people to help address this issue.

"The council's Anti Litter Action Plan sets out a vision for a clean district where it is unacceptable to create litter. The council has a lead role in improving the cleanliness of our district, and to achieve this we are focusing on three key areas; enforcement, education and service delivery.

"Everybody who lives, works in and visits the district also has a role to play in achieving the vision. Schools can make a significant contribution."

Initially schools are being asked to put together a plan, which they feel can improve the cleanliness of the environment, by March 28.
The three schools judged to have the most creative and imaginative ideas will then be asked to put their plans into practice over a three month period.

The entry then judged to be the best will win £1,000, the second prize is £500, and third £250. The winning schools will be free to spend the money on whatever they choose.
