Lancaster City Council has vowed to replant a memorial tree that was damaged by vandals last week.
On Friday (February 8) council park rangers were on a routine inspection of Regent Park in Morecambe when they discovered the vandalised tree.
It had been snapped in half and a plaque commemorating Keira Marie Buckley, in whose honour the tree was planted, had been stolen.
The baby girl tragically passed away aged just six weeks old in June 2005. The memorial was planted in July 2005 with help from the Regent Park Bowling and Social Club.
Mark Davies, Head of City Council (Direct) Services, said: "Lancaster City Council is appalled at this mindless act of vandalism. To wreck a memorial in honour of a girl who tragically died is a despicable act.
"We will be replanting the tree in the near future and would urge people to treat it with the respect it deserves."
The vandalism took place in the early hours of Friday February 8. Anyone with information on the incident is asked to telephone Lancaster police on 01524 63333 or anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
