Heysham Community Pool will celebrate its 30th birthday by presenting an extra special gift to one of its most regular customers.
Thirty years ago Ernie I'Anson heard about the building of a new pool on Osborne Road in Morecambe and decided to check out the building works for himself.
It was the start of a 30-year-old association with the pool and even now, at the age of 95, Ernie still takes a regular dip to keep himself fit.
As a thank you for his support over the years, Lancaster City Council is giving Ernie a complimentary pass so he can use the pool for free whenever he fancies a swim.
Welcoming the gesture, Ernie said: "I've always loved swimming and I try and go as often as I can.
"I particularly like Heysham because it’s a nice small pool, the staff are very friendly and they look after me very well.
"I try to go once or twice a week when I can, but now it's free I might go three or four!"
Heysham Pool opened its doors in 1978. It is operated by Lancaster City Council and offers public swimming, lessons for both children and adults, life-saving courses, parties and much more. The pool is 25 metres by 10 metres with a maximum depth of two metres, which allows for diving at the deep end.
For a quiet swim, the pool offers adults only and women only swimming sessions throughout the week. For the younger age groups swimming lessons are available, and the pool provides times for family sessions, as well providing mats and floats during public swimming times for the children to enjoy.
Private bookings are also available for clubs and children's parties.
Coun Maia Whitelegg, cabinet member with responsibility for culture, added: "Heysham Pool is one of Lancaster City Council's most prized community assets.
"I hope Ernie enjoys his gift and uses it as much as he can!"
