Lancaster City Council has prepared a new appraisal of the Morecambe Conservation Area and wants to hear your views.

Lancaster City Council has prepared a new appraisal of the Morecambe Conservation Area and wants to hear your views.

Eric MorecambeThe review of the Morecambe Conservation Area is an important part of the preparation for the proposed second Townscape Heritage Initiative for the town: Morecambe THI 2: A View for Eric.

Conservation Areas are recognised as having special architectural or historical interest, the character of which it is important to preserve or enhance.

The document looks at the relationship between Morecambe’s built environment and the Bay and how the town grew out of the fishing village of Poulton-le-Sands. Further to this, the document also looks at how much of Morecambe’s character also stems from what is intangible, such as its fishing heritage and its historic association with the stars of musical hall and variety theatre.

Council officers are keen to know what local people think of the Conservation Area and invite comments on such aspects as:

* What you think is special about Morecambe’s buildings / setting?
* Which buildings or features make a positive contribution to the town?
* Which spaces do you appreciate or think could be made better?
* What has improved over the last few years or changed for the worse?

Councillor Evelyn Archer, cabinet member with responsibility for regeneration in Morecambe said:  “With the re-opening of the Midland Hotel, this is an ideal opportunity for people to start thinking about their own role in Morecambe’s future and help input into the THI 2 bid.”
