Morecambe FC are backing Lancaster Cty Council’s gardeners in their attempts to dig up gold at this year’s RHS Flower Show at Tatton.
Their entry to the National Flower Bed Competition of the show, which runs from July 23 to 27, is entitled "Bring me football" and celebrates Morecambe FC’s achievement in gaining promotion to the Football League.
It features a colourful display of flowers laid out in the shape of Morecambe FC’s Christie Park.
In the centre of the pitch, a replica of the famous sculpture of Eric Morecambe which adorns the seafront, looks out over the stands.
Last year the team picked up a Gold medal with their display ‘Out of Africa’, which marked the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the slave trade.
Lancaster City Council’s gardening crew have started work on what they hope is going to be another award winning entry at this year’s RHS Flower Show at Tatton Park. A team of four will journey down to Tatton Park on July 20 to set up the display ready for the opening day.
Morecambe FC chief executive, Rod Taylor, said: “We are delighted, and honoured, to have been chosen as the focal point for this prestigious competition. A lot of hard work has gone into this display and we wish them well.’’
Coun Jon Barry, cabinet member with responsibility for City Council (Direct) Services, said: “Our grounds maintenance staff do an excellent job of keeping our parks and gardens packed full of colour right through the summer.
“The RHS show gives them the chance to show off their skills to a wider audience, some of whom I hope will be encouraged to pay the district a visit in person. I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed that they are able to follow-up last year’s result with another Gold medal.”
