The statue of Morecambe's favourite son will be the venue for a special public consultation event on how the area could benefit from up to £2million.

On Tuesday 5th and Wednesday 6th August, the area around the Eric Morecambe statue will be transformed to exhibit a number of specially commissioned artistic visions of how the area could look with the benefit of grant funding through the proposed second Morecambe Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI).

The event will take place between 11am and 3.30pm.

THI 2: ‘A View for Eric’ is essentially about giving the much loved statue of Eric Morecambe a view to complement his stunning backdrop of the wonderful Bay and Lakeland hills.

The visions have been produced to fire the public’s imagination and get everybody thinking about Eric’s view and the surrounding area. Lancaster City Council officers will be available to answer questions and take people’s views. Renowned Eric Morecambe impersonator, Bob More, will be there to bring humour and sunshine to the event.

Coun Evelyn Archer, cabinet member with special responsibility for regeneration in Morecambe, said: "The consultation should get everybody thinking about their own role in Morecambe’s future. People’s comments will then help inform and shape the proposal for a second THI for the town.”

There will also be an opportunity to view and discuss the draft Morecambe Conservation Area Appraisal and the Conservation Management Plan. These are both available to view now at www.lancaster.gov.uk/morecambecaa.

The proposal for THI 2 centres on the western end of the Conservation Area, specifically the commercial properties of Marine Road Central and Victoria Street and the interlinking routes between these, such as Skipton Street.

The council is currently developing a number of detailed bids to secure £2m of grant funding for repair and renovation projects in the THI 2 target area, with almost £1m provisionally earmarked by the Heritage Lottery Fund. If successful with the bids, grants should be available to targeted properties from Spring 2009 to undertake high quality heritage-led repair and renovation projects.
