Pupils get their Wheely Wednesdays Awards

Seven pupils in the district’s Bike It schools are to be proud owners of brand new bikes after taking part in recent Wheely Wednesdays – an initiative to encourage children to cycle to school at least once a week.

Seven pupils in the district’s  Bike It schools are to be proud owners of brand new bikes after taking part in recent Wheely Wednesdays – an initiative to encourage children to cycle to school at least once a week.

Each time pupils swapped four wheels for two for their school journey they received a raffle ticket to be entered into a prize draw to win a bike.

On Tuesday 22 July , St Patrick's bike will be presented in an end of year presentation assembly and one lucky pupil will cycle away on brand new wheels!

Through creative initiatives like Wheely Wednesdays, the Bike It project achieves average cycling levels of 10% in participating schools, when the national average is less than 1%. Run by sustainable transport charity, Sustrans, the project is funded by Cycling England and the bike industry, with local support from Lancaster City Council’s Cycling Demonstration Town Project. The prize bikes were funded by Sustrans and Lancaster City Council.

Kathy Bashford, Sustrans’ Bike It Officer for the Lancaster district, said: “Thanks to this and other initiatives we've seen amazing numbers of cyclists to the Bike It schools this term.  Now they are in the habit and enjoying cycling many of them will continue throughout the summer, the Autumn term and hopefully into adulthood!”
