Wheelie Big 'Bike it' Picnic

The district's Sustrans Bike It project and Lancaster City Council invite you to pack your rucksacks full of treats and cycle along to their Big Bike It Picnic.

The district’s Sustrans Bike It project and Lancaster City Council invite you to pack your rucksacks full of treats and cycle along to their Big Bike It Picnic.

To celebrate another fantastic year of encouraging children to cycle to school, Bike It Officer, Kathy Bashford is teaming up with the council’s Cycling Demonstration Town Team to host a picnic in Happy Mount Park on Sunday, 20th July from 1pm - 3pm.

With support from Bay Radio, the free event will include:

An amazing performance by champion trials cyclists Ben Slinger and Danny Butler

  • Guided family rides to the event from Lancaster and Heysham
  • Bay Radio live throughout the day
  • Bike safety checks by Dr Bike
  • Family Cycle Maintenance Training (please call Pedal Power on 65328 to pre-book)
  • Cycle skills course
  • Virtual cycle racing competition and much more!

The event is running in conjunction with the NSPCC Big Bike Ride when thousands of people all over the country will be taking up the cycling challenge to help create a better future for children.

The Big Bike ride is open to everyone and kicks off from the Bay Cottages play area in Heysham (just north east of the Knowlys Road access to the promenade) at 12.30pm

If you want to take part in the ride and raise money for the NSPCC at the same time,  the ride will cost adults £5, children £2.  Alternatively, you can get your friends and family to sponsor you.  Forms are available for downloading at www.thebay.co.uk or Lancaster and Morecambe Town Hall customer service centres.

All participants raising money will be entered into a prize draw to win a bike from Top Mark in Barrow worth up to £200.

If you, your school or your workplace are already planning something special for the Big Bike ride or have already raised a considerable amount of sponsorship, Bay Radio want to hear from you.  Email your plans and news to baynews@cnradio.co.uk and get yourself on air!

Ashley Cooper, NSPCC Community Appeals Manager Cumbria and North Lancashire said:  "NSPCC are delighted to be in partnership with both The Bay and Lancaster City Council for the Morecambe Big Bike Ride. This should be a great fun family day out and an opportunity to raise much needed funds to support NSPCC's vital work with abused and neglected children, here in the North West."

Also, for those who live in Lancaster who want to get to the event in hassle-free style, a guided family ride will also set off at 12.30pm from the Millennium Bridge.

All children taking part in the rides must be accompanied by an adult and have a roadworthy bike.

Everyone welcome - just bring your bike, a picnic and relax.

Admission to Happy Mount Park is free.
