Lancaster City Council Launches 2008 Walks and Tours Programme

One of the most satisfying ways of discovering and enjoying an area and its attractions is to take a walk or tour, led by a knowledgeable guide.

One of the most satisfying ways of discovering and enjoying an area and its attractions is to take a walk or tour, led by a knowledgeable guide.

Lancaster City Council has drawn together a full itinerary of walks, tours and related activities, which take place across the district from midsummer, through to the end of the year.

From Wednesday, 11 June, the packed programme will be available in a new booklet, free of charge from the Lancaster and Morecambe Tourist Information Centres, the council’s customer service centres at Lancaster and Morecambe Town Halls and many attractions in the district.

Included in historic Lancaster are regular favourites, such as tours of the Castle, St. Peter's Cathedral and the Edwardian Town Hall.  These are complemented by well-established, themed walks, such as The Pendle Witches Tour, Lancaster Cemetery Tours and exploring Lancaster’s scientific past, Dinosaurs, Helium and Scientists. Information is also included on the variety of events and activities, which take place in Lancaster’s City, Maritime and Judges’ Lodgings Museums.

Elsewhere in the district, there is a remarkable range of events.  In Morecambe, local guide Peter Wade continues with his popular 'Echoes of Art Deco' walk, which explores the resort's 1930s period buildings including, of course, the newly restored and reopened landmark Midland Hotel, on the promenade.  Peter also leads 'A Date with Dame Thora’ and ‘Eric’s Morecambe’, which look back at the people and places associated with the early life of the resort’s most famous son and daughter, and a Heysham Walk – ‘In Search of Turner’s View’.  The booklet also includes information on opportunities to visit Morecambe’s Winter Gardens.

The surrounding coast and countryside provides an idyllic setting for a variety of activities, including tours of the RSPB’s Leighton Moss Reserve, walks around the National Trust’s properties in the Arnside and Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and a series of walks and activities led by the Lancashire Wildlife Trust – as well as the famous Cross Bay Walks.

The booklet also includes information on a programme of guided cycle rides, staged as part of the council’s ‘Cycling Demonstration Town’ initiative and a variety of themed cruises on the Lancaster Canal.

Completing the picture and reinforcing the message that North Lancashire is a particularly vibrant, culturally-rich area, is the city council’s own forthcoming programme of festivals and events, such as Morecambe’s Sandcastle Festival and ‘We Do Like to be Beside the Sea’ weekend and Lancaster’s November Fireworks Spectacular.
