An opening ceremony is taking place to celebrate the successful redevelopment of Fisherman’s Square in Poulton.
Coun Shirley Burns will open the new square on Tuesday June 24 at 2pm. Amongst those attending the ceremony are local residents, councillors, contractors, members of Poulton Neighbourhood Management and representatives from Lancaster City Council.
The transformation of Fisherman’s Square has resulted in a dramatic improvement in one of the community’s largest open spaces. The new design ties in modern landscaping design whilst remaining in keeping with Poulton’s heritage as a fishing village.
Within the landscaping there is a thematic representation of Morecambe Bay and an interpretation panel will soon be in place to show exactly how the design works.
The symbol of Poulton, the three fish, has been recreated in a mosaic and is the focal point within the scheme.
This already appears on bollards within the Homezone, on a mural on Poulton Road, on the school uniforms of Poulton-le-Sands Primary School and is the emblem for Morecambe Parish Church, and so it has a unique local identity.
The scheme has been funded by Lancaster City Council, the Single Regeneration Budget and Poulton Neighbourhood Management.
The redevelopment works have cost around £200,000 and have been directed by the Management Board of Poulton Neighbourhood Management and the Housing and Built Environment Sub Committee.
The contractors, Cumbria, undertaking the redevelopment were the same company who redeveloped the award winning Homezone. The new Fisherman’s Square site is a high quality development that is available for all of the community to use.
