Schools to battle it out at the final of the Home Safety Quiz

Four primary schools are preparing to battle it out for the honour of being the winner of Lancaster City Council’s annual Home Safety Quiz.
Each year approximately one million children are injured as a result of accidents in and around their homes, a figure which all of us would like to see dramatically reduced.
In an attempt to do this all 54 local primary schools in the district are annually invited to take part in the Home Safety Quiz, an initiative which aims to increase awareness amongst 9-11 year olds of the dangers in and around the home.
Forty three schools took part in this year’s quiz heats and classes were visited by environmental health staff from Lancaster City Council and fire officers.
Year six children answered questions on subjects such as fire, slips and falls, burns and scalds, water safety, electricity and poisoning.
This year's heat winners are:
* Heysham St Peter’s CofE Primary School
* Silverdale St John’s CofE Voluntary School
* Thurnham Glasson Christ Church CofE School
* Trumacar Community Primary School
Teams from these schools will be battling it out to see who knows the most about home safety at the quiz final on Friday June 13 at Morecambe Town Hall.
The final is being kindly sponsored by Lancaster Round Table and the winners will be awarded the Home Safety Quiz Shield as well as gift vouchers and cash prizes for the schools.
Coun David Kerr, cabinet member with responsibility for environmental health, said: “This event has become extremely successful and is welcomed by teachers and parents as a way of getting important safety messages to more than 1,000 children across the district.
“Children are very good at passing on such messages and therefore reaching family and friends with potentially life saving information.
“By encouraging children to look at safety as an important issue we hope to reduce the number of accidents which occur to both them and those around them.”
