Students compete for best 50s look-a-like

To get in the mood for the Tutti Frutti Festival next month, students are taking part in a 1950s makeover competition on Wednesday June 11.

To get in the mood for the Tutti Frutti Festival next month, students are taking part in a 1950s makeover competition on Wednesday June 11.

Around 20 talented students studying Beauty Therapy at Lancaster and Morecambe College will have two hours to transform their models into 1950s look-a-likes using make-up, hairstyling and clothing and accessories.

Last year's winnersThe models will take to the catwalk where they will be individually judged by experts and members of the Tutti Frutti Festival committee. The judges are looking for four winning students who demonstrate the ability of creativity and interpretation of the 1950s theme as well as the overall effect and visual impact of the finished model. All entrants will receive certificates and additional prizes.

Sue Boswell, from Poulton Neighbourhood Management, has helped to organise the Tutti Frutti Festival and is pleased that the college has been involved in this way. She said: “We ran this competition last year and it was a fantastic experience. Last year's students set a high benchmark so we are expecting great things from this year’s competition.
“In the preparation for the competition the students will research how people dressed and looked back in the 1950s. This has been a great way for the college to get involved and to help us to promote the Tutti Frutti Festival.”

The Tutti Frutti 1950s Seaside Festival is taking place on Friday 25th and Saturday 26th July at the Carleton from 7pm. Tickets cost £15 or £25 for both nights. Friday’s line up includes internationally acclaimed acts such as the Firebirds, Furious and the Hotwires. Saturday’s line up sees top rock and rollers; Phil Hayley and His Comments, Darrel Higham and the Enforcers and Crazy Jay and the Partytimers take to the stage.

There will be free family fun on Saturday afternoon at The Platform from 12pm. There will be live tribute acts and bands playing as well as lots of 50s style entertainment, including vintage vehicles, Punch and Judy, stalls, jive dance displays, fairground rides and more.
