A team of four pupils from Thurnham Glasson Christ Church CofE Primary School won the final of Lancaster City Council’s 2008 Home Safety Quiz.

A team of four pupils from Thurnham Glasson Christ Church CofE Primary School won the final of Lancaster City Council’s 2008 Home Safety Quiz.

Thurnham School with the Mayor and Coun KerrThurnham Glasson school went head-to-head against teams representing Heysham St Peter’s CofE Primary, Silverdale St John’s CofE Voluntary and Trumacar Community Primary, to prove their knowledge of home safety and accident prevention.

Forty three schools took part in this year’s heats and the four teams in the final had already shown a very high standard of knowledge for safety issues by finishing as the top scoring schools.

The final was held at Morecambe Town Hall and senior environmental health officer Peter Lord put the teams through their paces with five rounds of challenging questions relating to home safety, accident prevention and first aid.  The quiz culminated in an exciting quick fire buzzer round which saw Thurnham Glasson come through as the winners.

Coun David Kerr, cabinet member with responsibility for environmental health, said: "Lancaster City Council's annual home safety quiz continues to be popular with schools across the district. By encouraging children to treat home safety as an important issue we hope to reduce the number of accidents which occur to both them and those around them."

Roger Walker, community safety officer of Lancaster Round Table awarded the winners with the Home Safety Quiz shield, £20 gift vouchers for the team members and a £60 cash prize for the school.

The Home Safety Quiz is a well established annual event which reaches more than 1,000 children across the district and is always met with enthusiasm and interest by teachers and pupils alike.
