Torrisholme Cemetery Heritage and Environment Day

Lancaster City Council will be holding an open day to showcase improvements made within Torrisholme Cemetery in the past two years.

Lancaster City Council will be holding an open day to showcase improvements made within Torrisholme Cemetery in the past two years. 

This free family event will take place on July 12 from 1.30pm - 4.30pm.  It will appeal to all ages and is an opportunity to appreciate the cemetery as an important record of the social history of the area it serves and as a public open space full of wildlife.

Events and activities will include the following:

* Launch of new heritage walk.
* Entertainment by the High Society Jazz Band.
* Unveiling of refurbished Cinematograph Trade Benevolent Fund Garden of Remembrance.
* Treasure hunt.
* Chainsaw wood carving demonstration.
* Period fancy dress competition.
* Junior ranger nature workshop.
* Exhibition marquee featuring heritage and environmental themes.
* Refreshments.


Visitors to the event will also have the chance to see many of the improvements made over the last two years by the council with help from the Friends of Torrisholme Cemetery.
Improvements include:

* New planting schemes introduced plus wildflower meadow
* Woodland burial area refurbishment started
* New signage provided
* Wildlife habitiats provided for hedgehogs, butterflies, bees, insects and birds

The event will be opened by the Mayor of Lancaster, Coun Keith Budden at 1.30pm, so why not come along and enjoy a guided heritage walk, followed by tea and scones listening to the highly acclaimed High Society Jazz Band located next to the wildflower meadow.

Members of the Friends group will be in period dress and the public are encouraged to step back in time and join them in Edwardian, WWI or WWII dress.  Prizes will be given for both the fancy dress and treasure hunt competitions.
 

This event has been supported by donations from the Cinema and Television Benevolent Fund and Preston, Ireland & Bowker Funeral Directors.
