Dukes Cinema to host 3rd Bike Film Festival

In recognition of Lancaster's status as a Cycling Demonstration Town, the Dukes Cinema, Lancaster is to host its 3rd Bike Film Festival.

In recognition of Lancaster's status as a Cycling Demonstration Town, the Dukes Cinema, Lancaster is to host its 3rd Bike Film Festival.

Aimed at encouraging, respecting and celebrating cycling, the Bike Film Festival, 2008 is scheduled to take place between 7-14 April, and is a mixture of feature films in the auditorium and short films and other events shown for free in the gallery.

The festival begins on April 7 with "The Carbon Cycle", a talk by Dr Kate Rawles who cycled 4553 miles from Mexico to Alaska to discover American attitudes to climate change and finishes on April 14 with a "Children's Cycle Workshop" which invites children to find out about how fun cycling can be.  This will include children making their own dustcaps and a workshop with Dr Bike. The suggested age for those taking part in the workshop is 7-11, although all are welcome.

A highly anticipated feature of the festival is a film called 'B.I.K.E: The Movie' on Friday, April 11, which is set to be the Duke's and Lancaster’s first pedal powered film.  The system has been developed by Dr Martin Burbidge, a local electronic and radio frequency research consultant. The feature will be accompanied by a brief presentation explaining key features and motivations for the system.

Commenting on this year's festival, Leon Gurevitch, Film Programme Manager at the Dukes said: “We’re really excited to host the Annual Bike Film Festival. The mixture of big screen events and smaller scale workshops and talks makes the festival the prefect community celebration of cycling in Lancaster. It's great to be able to programme events that can reach people of all ages and interests."

Coun Maia Whitelegg, member of the Cycling Demonstration Town Project Board and Lancaster City Council cabinet member with responsibility for culture said: "Cycling is undiluted good news - it reduces greenhouse gases, improves health, reduces congestion and is good for the economy.  This festival gives yet another boost to cycling in Lancaster and Morecambe and I am delighted that the Dukes is hosting such an important event."

Tickets for the auditorium events cost £5 (concessions £4). Places in the gallery for the free films and events are strictly limited so booking is strongly recommended.
