Lancaster City Council to bid for additional cycling funds
Lancaster City Council is to bid for extra funds to extend the district's status as a Cycling Demonstration Town (CDT).
Lancaster City Council is to bid for extra funds to extend the district's status as a Cycling Demonstration Town (CDT).
On Tuesday the council's cabinet approved plans to bid for £1.5million from Cycling England. If the bid is successful the council will be able to extend the CDT project for a further three years to 2011.
The extra cash would allow plans to go ahead to develop new cycle friendly routes into and across Lancaster city centre, health related cycling projects and work with major employers to support their cycle to work plans.
Coun Eileen Blamire, cabinet member with responsibility for cycling, said: "Cycling is becoming an increasingly popular mode of transport whether it be for leisure and exercise purposes or just travelling to work or school. The additional funding from Cycling England would allow the expansion of current projects, but would also make possible several new projects that we have in the pipeline."
The Lancaster and Morecambe area is one of six demonstration areas in the country to receive funding from Cycling England. Already known as the 'cycling capital of the North West', the area continues to be recognised for its commitment to improving cycling routes.
If the bid is successful the project will also contribute to some of the council’s objectives, such as 'Making the district a cleaner and healthier place' and to 'support sustainable communities and actions on climate change'
.
The CDT project is due to come to an end in the autumn of 2008.
It is hoped that the bid for extra funds will be successful so it can be extended for a further three years.
