Maritime Weekend sails into Glasson Dock

Lancaster City Council's 20th celebration of all things maritime will take place at the picturesque village of Glasson Dock over the Easter Bank Holiday weekend (March 21 to 24).

Lancaster City Council’s 20th celebration of all things maritime will take place at the picturesque village of Glasson Dock over the Easter Bank Holiday weekend (March 21 to 24).

The Glasson Maritime Weekend is the world's biggest gathering of sea-song and shanty performers, who will be performing throughout the weekend at various venues.  They will be ably supported by an array of maritime-themed entertainment and activities.

Mirth and mayhem will be provided by the infamous Mr Punch and his wife Judy while, in an adjacent booth on Quayside West Green, Lancaster's very own Innerstate Theatre Company will perform some tongue-in-cheek nautical dramas.

Over on Quayside East Green the maritime pavilion will showcase the work of Des Newton, one of the country's leading experts in putting ships in bottles.

Eric Greenough, a member of the International Guild of Knot-tyers, will demonstrate the ancient art of knot tying.

Both the pavilion and displays will be open from the Saturday to Bank Holiday Monday.

And don't forget to pay a visit to the Canal Village, on the north eastern edge of the Canal Basin, where there will be an exhibition of coracles. There will also be the chance to view an exhibition telling the history of the once great herring fishery and the chance to indulge in some freshly smoked kippers.

Lancaster's Maritime Museum will also be taking part in the festival with regular tours and a talk on the Saturday. On the Sunday the museum will hold performances of sea songs and shantys.

Regular bus services will link the museum with Glasson Dock.
