Well-known mezzo soprano Wendy Sharrock will give a taste of the life and music of Kathleen Ferrier, one of the greatest contralto singers that England has ever produced, at The Platform in Morecambe on Friday March 28.
Well-known mezzo soprano Wendy Sharrock will give a taste of the life and music of Kathleen Ferrier, one of the greatest contralto singers that England has ever produced, at The Platform in Morecambe on Friday March 28.
Wendy will include in her programme songs which became popular largely through Kathleen's performances such as Blow The Wind Southerly and The Keel Row as well as pieces by Handel, Schubert and Mendelssohn. She will be accompanied by Charles Edmondson from Kendal on keyboard.
Kathleen Ferrier was born in Higher Walton, just outside Preston. By the time she died in 1953 she was a huge international star. She possessed a remarkable contralto voice and a warm personality both on and off stage.
Wendy Sharrock was born in Morecambe and went to the Guildhall School of Music in London followed by post graduate studies at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. From there she went on to sing for several years with Opera North and more recently, Heritage Opera. Her operatic roles have included Evadne in 'Troilus and Cressida', Azucena in 'Il Travatore', Ulrika in 'A Masked Ball', Amneris in 'Aida', Cherubino in 'Marriage of Figaro' and Mrs Grose in 'The Turn of the Screw'.
Now living in Morecambe, Wendy combines family life with teaching and performing regularly with local choral societies as a soloist. She has an extensive repertoire and an ability to sing a wide range of styles.
