Closure of Cable Street car park
Cable Street car park in Lancaster will be closed for a further week and will remain closed over the Bank Holiday weekend.
Cable Street car park in Lancaster will be closed for a further week and will remain closed over the Bank Holiday weekend.
The delay is partially due to the commissioning of additional works to further improve the quality of the lighting and the fencing around the car park. The contractor has also had some difficulty in programming the availability of equipment and personnel to relay the surface of the car park, but has assured the council that every effort is being made to minimise the closure period.
There remains sufficient car parking capacity around the city and customers are asked to use the remaining car parks that are all operating normally.
St Nicholas Arcades car park will continue to remain open until midnight to provide additional evening parking capacity in the area.
Coun John Gilbert, cabinet member with responsibility for parking policy, said: “It is unfortunate that we have had to extend the period that this car park will be closed, but the end result will mean much improved facilities for motorists."
The council has written to all businesses in the immediate vicinity of the car park to update them on the reconstruction works.
The works to the car park are supported by the Lancaster District Chamber of Commerce, Trade and Industry.
Jerry North from the Chamber added: "Whilst the delay in re-opening is disappointing I think the additional works will further improve the area and are welcomed."
