Thurlwell’s bakery and confectioners are delighted with the improvements to the street and to show their appreciation they offered the work men from Volker Stevin a free lunch.
On Monday the improvement works were completed and the street is now open to vehicles. An investment of around £500,000 by Winning Back Morecambe's West End has provided a new street layout that gives the look and feel of a quality shopping area. Changes to the layout of the road mean that shoppers are now able to park their cars on both sides of Yorkshire Street but there is still a one way system in place, as before.
Features of the new design include trees, stone cobbles and the kerbs have been removed to create a single surface creating a similar feel to a town centre street. Careful consideration has gone in to the design and consultation has taken place with people with visual impairment and disabilities to ensure that the new street is accessible to all.
The improvements will make shopping in the west End a more enjoyable experience and hopefully more businesses will be encouraged to take up some of the empty units.
