New festival to celebrate art in the rural areas

Lancaster City Council is delighted to announce its support for the Bowland Festival Arts.

Lancaster City Council is delighted to announce its support for the Bowland Festival Arts.

Running from the 1 -15 June 2008 the festival aims to draw together the wealth of creative talent in Bowland.  Throughout the festival there will be a range of creative workshops, exhibitions and open studio events for residents and visitors to enjoy. 

The council has worked closely with Green Close Studios, based in Melling, by contributing £500 towards the project as well as offering help from their staff.  The studios have been instrumental in developing and promoting creative arts activity across the Forest of Bowland AONB. 

Workshops:

Artists from Green Close studios will be holding three free drop-in sessions. 

Sunday 1 June 11am - 5pm: Pete Flowers will be working with visitors to create a new map of Bowland
Friday 6 June 11am -5pm: Sue Flowers will be holding a drawing session
Sunday 8 June 11am - 5pm: Gareth Dennison will be running a digital discovery day, working with photography and digital imaging. 

Open Studios:

Green Close studios will be open from 11am – 5pm Friday to Sunday from the 1 – 15 of June.  Everyone is welcome to come and see a fantastic range of artwork by studio artists and designers Gareth Dennison, Pete Flowers, Sue Flowers, Geoff Parr and Tom Urry.

Other events taking place in the Lune Valley area include:

Tuesday 3 June: Clay to Brick - Visit Claughton brickworks and learn to carve your own brick in Claughton village hall before it is fired at the factory - £10.  9:30am – 3.30pm

Saturday 7 June: Make a kite at Looking Well Studios, Bentham - £1.50 - £2. 10.30am -1.15pm.

Tuesday 10 June: Painting with wool, an introduction to felt making at Retford House, Robin Lane Bentham – £10. 1pm - 4pm.

Saturday 14 June: Stone carving – an introduction by Steve Bentley at Looking Well Studios, Bentham - £10. 10am -12.45pm and 1.15pm – 4pm

Sue Flowers, director of Green Close Studios, said: “We want visitors and residents to appreciate this beautiful environment, and the role that the arts can play in assisting our understanding of places and our relationships to them.”
