Following the election of Lancaster City Council’s new leader and cabinet at the council meeting held on Monday May 19, the allocation of cabinet members’ responsibilities has now been decided.
The cabinet is made up on the grounds of proportional representation with members from all five of the political groups.
Councillor Roger Mace, leader of the council, for the forthcoming year to May 2009 is joined on the cabinet by councillors Evelyn Archer, Shirley Burns, David Kerr, Eileen Blamire, Abbott Bryning, Tony Johnson, Jon Barry, Jane Fletcher and John Gilbert.
In announcing the portfolios Coun Mace said: “I would like to thank all those who have been involved with the cabinet over the last 12 months.
“In particular, I would like to acknowledge the contributions to the work of the Council that have been made over the past year by the two members who have just left the City’s Cabinet. I thank Councillor Maia Whitelegg for her role in supporting children and young people. In the year to come, I shall be promoting the case she helped to articulate for more activities for young people in this district.
“And I thank Councillor June Ashworth for her contribution to giving a higher profile to enforcement activities in relation to things like littering and fly tipping. Her success in this cause is recognised in the recent budget provision for additional enforcement officers to be appointed during the current year.
“I hope the representatives of the various groups in Cabinet will work as well together, in the coming year as in the year just ended.”
The first meeting of the newly elected cabinet will be held on June 3 at 10am at Morecambe Town Hall.
