Lancaster City Council’s series of free lunchtime concerts at St John’s Church, Chapel Street in Lancaster is to be launched on Thursday, June 5 with the ever popular Promenade Clarinet Trio.
The trio comprised of Howard Rogerson on clarinet, Jeremy Lamburn on cello and Nigel Spooner on grand piano, will perform music by Glinka, Brahms and Beethoven from 12.45pm.
The young Beethoven composed his Op.11 trio for clarinet, cello and piano in 1798 when the clarinet was still a ‘new’ instrument. It became a model for Glinka in 1826 and Brahms in 1882, by which time the clarinet had become a mature instrument in the orchestra and chamber music.
The three performers are all established musicians in orchestral, chamber and solo work. Howard Rogerson also conducts his newly formed Promenade Concert Orchestra of Morecambe in which Jeremy Lamburn leads the cello section. Nigel Spooner works regularly with Jeremy Lamburn and other instrumentalists as well as teaching, directing and examining.
Coun Jane Fletcher, cabinet member with responsibility for arts, museums, leisure, sport and young people said: “I’m incredibly impressed that the work the council is undertaking to provide free, open and accessible music events for residents is proving increasingly popular each year, with audiences attending from across the Northwest."
The concert series will run from June 5 – August 21 on respective Thursdays and will start at 12.45pm at each event. All performances are free.
