Advanced Stop Lines

Ever wondered what the purpose and advantage of the bright red tarmac boxes might be that appear to be springing up at road junctions all over the district?

New Stop Line in LancasterEver wondered what the purpose and advantage of the bright red tarmac boxes might be that appear to be springing up at road junctions all over the district?

Advanced Stop Lines (or ASLs) are nothing new but due to an increase in numbers of cyclists in the district as a whole, more and more are being installed across Lancaster and Morecambe to help keep all road users including cyclists and pedestrians safe at major road junctions.

Funded by the districts’ Cycling Demonstration Town project, the roll out of ASLs is a low cost and effective way of organising and allocating space for motor vehicles and cyclists at locations where accidents are most likely to occur.

The coloured surface highlights an area of the road in which only cyclists are allowed to wait making them more visible in front of traffic queues and allowing them to position themselves in readiness for the lights turning green, whether going straight on or making a right turn

On some occasions, cycle lanes may also be provided leading up to the junction to allow cyclists to safely get ahead of the traffic and take up the space allocated to them.

New ASLs can be found in Scotforth, Lancaster and Westgate, Morecambe.  The roll out of the scheme will see many more ASLs being installed on a priority basis at several of the 30 or so major signal controlled junctions across the district. Existing ASL’s which have become faded and less effective are also due to be revamped

Coun Eileen Blamire, Lancaster City Council cabinet member with responsibility for cycling and community safety said:  “It’s extremely important to us that both motorists and cyclists are able to use our roads together safely.  The presence of more Advanced Stop Lines, if used correctly by everyone will help to ensure that all road users have enough room to avoid accidents at some of our busiest junctions.”
