Lancaster City Council is taking to the road - quite literally - in a bid to encourage residents to register their right to vote.

Lancaster City Council is taking to the road - quite literally - in a bid to encourage residents to register their right to vote.

The council has arranged for adverts to be placed on the rear of Stagecoach buses travelling in and around the district, reminding residents to return their electoral registration forms.

And for those that return their forms by September 15 there could be a nice surprise in store as they will be entered into a free prize draw to win £500.

Up to 40 per cent of households in the Lancaster district have yet to register their details for the next version of the Electoral Register, which is due to be published on December 1.

Reminders will be sent out on September 22 to all those households that have failed to register their details.

Those that still fail to register will receive a visit from one of the council's team of canvassers.

Alison Braidford, Lancaster City Council’s elections' officer, said: "It is vitally important that people register to vote and, in doing so, ensure their voice is heard.

"Not only is it a legal requirement to register, but those that fail to do so could find it difficult in obtaining credit or opening a bank account."
