Survey of potential housing sites

Lancaster City Council is preparing to survey more than 250 potential housing sites to see if they are able to accommodate some of the 6,000 new homes needed in the district over the next 15 years.

Lancaster City Council is preparing to survey more than 250 potential housing sites to see if they are able to accommodate some of the 6,000 new homes needed in the district over the next 15 years.

The locations have been identified as part of the Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment (SHLAA), which will investigate all potential housing sites across the district and examine their suitability, achievability and availability for housing.

Many of the sites have been identified by the public following a 'Call for Sites' earlier this year.

The next step in the process is to undertake detailed appraisals of the sites to determine their suitability.

It does not follow, however, that all the sites will be suitable for housing as several conflict with the sustainability objectives of the council and with national and regional planning policy.

To ensure an impartial and comprehensive assessment of sites, the council has commissioned Atkins Limited in conjunction with Lambert Smith Hampton to assist in the detailed assessment.

On completion the assessment will form a key component of the council’s Local Development Framework.
