Bike Film Festival 2009

A season of films, talks and free events aimed at encouraging and celebrating cycling.

Lancaster City Council’s Cycling Demonstration Town Team (CDT) and the Dukes, Lancaster are proud to bring you another season of films, talks and free events aimed at encouraging and celebrating cycling.

The festival kicks off on Saturday, 11 April with a free talk entitled ‘Nowtopia: How Pirate Programmers, Outlaw Bicyclists and Vacant-Lot Gardeners are inventing the future today!’ Author Chris Carlsson will outline his argument about a new politics of work, presenting a vivid slideshow of Nowtopian initiatives from around the world.

Two films being shown in the auditorium during the week are ‘Hell on Wheels’ on Tuesday, 14 April and 'Long Road North on Friday, 17 April.

'Hell on Wheels' is an outstandingly photographed documentary which captures the suffering and fame of those who compete in the Tour de France as well as the history of this famous race. ‘Long Road North’ follows a young Canadian through the mountains of Patagonia to the Canadian arctic after deciding to leave his office behind and cycle half way across the planet to experience the story of the road.

Two free tickets are available for each of these films. To be in with a chance of winning one, simply send your name and contact details to celebratingcycling@lancaster.gov.uk or telephone 582392. Winners will be selected at random on Monday, 13 April.

Chill out on Tuesday April 14 with pedal powered music from Boogie Bill Roberts and Ben Shakey Ruth and if you're looking for a holiday with a difference, why not come along to the final event of the festival on Thursday, 23 April and get some fresh ideas and inspiration from local people who have already enjoyed cycling holidays both home and abroad. After sharing their favourite slides, top tips, routes and suggestions, by the time you leave the Dukes, you’ll be itching to pedal off on your own cycling adventure.

Other free events include a screening of a film about the World Naked Bike Ride, ‘Seasons’ - an exciting film about mountain biking, as well as the Wickes family talking about Pedalling the Pilgrim Way in northern Spain.

Commenting on this year’s festival, Julie Brown, producer at the Dukes, said: “We’re very excited and proud to be hosting the fourth Annual Bike Film Festival. Each year we see a huge number cycling enthusiasts and expect the same this year. With all the different films and events available, it promises to be another successful festival.”
